The job of the Army Ordnance Corps, which became the Royal Army Ordnance Corps in 1918, was the maintenance and repair of armaments and munitions and it operated both at home and in all the theatres of the war. For the men working in the front line units all the dangers of warfare existed and they suffered a number of casualties. One of these was Arthur Callegari who was killed on 26th April, 1915, while attached to the 24th Brigade of the Royal Field Artillery, when a shell exploded in the Brigade Staff billets killing him and three others.
